Advanced Placement Program

September, 2011

Dear Parent:

Advanced Placement examinations are set nationally by the College Board to be given during May 7th through May 18th.  Students must register for their AP exams from March 6 - March 23 in the guidance office.  The cost of the exam is $87.00.  Please make your check payable to HHS.  Students with an interest in taking the exam will receive a copy of the AP Bulletin for Students and Parents.  Please review this bulletin for important information about the Advanced Placement Program or go on-line at www.collegeboard.com/apstudents.

Exams will be administered promptly at 8:00 a.m. according to the College Board's schedule.  Students must report for the morning exams promptly at 7:45 a.m. and afternoon exams at 11:45 a.m. on the assigned date.  Students will not be admitted late.  The room assignment is to be determined.  Advanced Placement exams vary in length; some may take up to four hours.  The length of each exam, listed in the AP Bulletin is the actual testing time.  These times do not include the required breaks or the reading of instructions.  Students will not be dismissed early from any exam, as this violates AP policy. Students having a conflict with the scheduled exam date must arrange for an alternate exam.  An alternate exam date requires College Board approval.

Taking the AP Exam allows students the opportunity to experience a college-level exam while in high school and to receive college credit in some cases.  Scores are reported on a 5-point scale.  A composite score for an AP grade of 5 is equivalent to the average score for college students earning a grade of A.  The AP grades of 4, 3, and 2 are equivalent to the average scores for students with college grades of B, C, and D, respectively.

If you have any questions regarding the Advanced Placement Program, please feel free to contact me at 847-792-3547.

Sincerely,

Janine M. Steffen, Ed.D.
